Hangin' on to Earth.

Put your talent to work by designing a unique handcrafted ornament that is based off the idea of sustainability. Recycled materials are encouraged. Limit the use of electricity, spray paints, etc. Make it elegant, make it excessive, make it unusual.

EAMES FILM FESTIVAL @ DWR SOUTH BEACH

The Eames Film FestivalThe legacy of Ray and Charles Eames extends far beyond their classic furniturepieces. Taking a multidisciplinary approach to design long before that was the norm, theEameses created over 100 short films between 1950 and 1982. Join DWR, in conjunction with theEames Foundation and Herman Miller for the Home®, as we celebrate their film legacy.We'll be screening seven films ranging from 1–30 minutes in length. Attendees are encouraged to stay for a discussion following the screenings. Refreshments will be served.

Friedman's art it is linked to 1960s conceptualism, arte povera and minimal to land art but his vision and working method goes beyond these historical precedents creating its own unique visual language; that of the minute and microscopic, in which his investigations focus on the smallness of things.

He gets his art supplies from drugstores, candy stores, the human body, and the supermarket. Friedman relentlessly invents intricate objects out of a range of household materials, such as styrofoam, masking tape, pencils, toilet paper, spaghetti, toothpicks and bubble gum. His work is obsessively and painstakingly crafted and is both beautiful and playful. Friedman's ability to transform common objects into something new, his devotion to material perfection, the way he conceptualizes the action of the artisan, enables him to elevate the ordinary to the status of art.

It was a great opening, a bit chili but fun! Thanks to all who made it on Saturday night. To those who couldn't, here are a couple of pictures of the event.

Gina Ruggeri's "New paintings"

Her work has a sense of lightness about it. Very subtle, yet extremely imposing. She sees her paintings as an overlap between real and imagined worlds. The works are painted with oil on Mylar. Because it is removed from the traditional frame of the rectangle, the image often appears as an illusionary object that floats in the white space of the wall, hovering in a continuum of physical and pictorial space.

Gina Ruggieri New Work
Ruggeri’s paintings depict natures’ objects like rocks, clouds and wood. She achieves a sense of depth and perspective by scaling them to the size of what could be referred as a human experience. Ruggeri creates her oil paintings on large-sized Mylar sheets. These cut-outs are then adhered directly to the wall transforming it into an illusionistic field upon which the images seamlessly float. These painted images create a trompe l'oeil quality of illusion, appearing three-dimensional yet paradoxically flat at the same time. The wood grain and decorative patterns that run through the images enhance and complicate the sense of volumetric form and space. Gina Ruggeri was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1970, obtained a M.F.A in 1996 from Yale School of Art. She works and lives in New York.

Come out and participate in this challenging series. The Working sessions are two hour concept generation events. Teams are comprised of students and professionals. All teams are given a project theme and a time limit. It is a fun way to kick start your mind and support local ID education.
